Woke early again but unfortunately not to another sunrise but rather to an angry looking man in a hi-vis jacket knocking on our window. Read the rest of this entry »
Woke up early with the sunrise and had a shower in the rest stop before continuing into Germany and towards Budapest. Read the rest of this entry »

Left home late morning to emotional goodbyes. I had been so busy between finishing my finals and getting ready for my trip that I hadn’t thought about the fact that I could be leaving home for the longest time ever in my life so far, anything up to 6 months. The adrenaline and excitement somewhat cancelled out most sad feelings though! Read the rest of this entry »
This afternoon myself and my good friend Stephen are going to drive out of Dublin towards Rosslare to get a ferry to France.
From France we plan to pass through Turkey on the way to Egypt. In Egypt we will follow the river Nile south accross the Sahara, passing through Sudan and going into Ethiopia. Accross the mountains in Ethiopia and into the Northern Frontier District in Kenya and finally, after dropping Steve off probably in Kenya and picking up my other friend Sarah i’ll continue South, eventually reaching South Africa.
That’s the grand plan anyway, we’re driving the car I got for my trip last year, a 1992 Toyota Hilux Surf (photos in the previous posts). Martin, my brilliant local mechanic has given the car the all clear so you never konw, it might make it the whole way or it might break down on the motorway in France.
All you have to do to find out how it goes is to subscribe to this blog which I plan to keep updated. Many things could and undoubtly will happen on this trip so about the only certainty with the whole expedition is that it won’t be boring!
This trip has been a dream of mine for quite some time, right now I feel like the luckiest person around!
More updates soon.
I came accross this poem written by Ben Onono recently which I reallly liked and thought I would post here in an effort to have a nice positive post on the top of my blog!
NOMAD
sleep is light for the nomad
the body, exhausted by space,
grows warm, stretching out, the mind strays…
remembering the length of the journey.sleep is light for the nomad,
but dreams are endless and wild.
soul versed in the art of solitude,
and studied in the science of goodbyes.the path of the mountain ridges
run like shivers down the spine.
and the last thought before sleep
is of another journey tomorrow…
I’ve been listening to Ben Onono’s album “Native Stranger” a lot recently and would recommend it to everyone. I’ve attached one of the songs from the album here:
More blog updates soon.
I’ll start by describing exactly what happened, in the interest of fairness I don’t want to leave anything out so it’s a little tedious at times but bear with it! Read the rest of this entry »
As the title of this post suggests, getting a car for the trip has truely been a saga. I’ve tried to keep the story as brief as possible but it wasn’t easy! Read the rest of this entry »
The last great piece in the puzzle has finally been finalized, we have a car!
Liz kindly donated her 1992 Toyota Hilux Surf to us to use on our trip and to donate to charity upon our arrival (if we make it!). Read the rest of this entry »
